About Me

Hello! I’m Matthew Tichenor, a Data Scientist with a passion for solving complex problems and unlocking the potential of data. With over 7 years of industry experience, I’ve collaborated with diverse teams to deliver impactful projects that have reshaped industries and improved operations.

From Actuarial Aspirations to Data Science Discoveries

My journey into the world of Data Science wasn’t a straight path. After initially pursuing a career as an actuary, I found myself seeking alternatives due to limited entry-level opportunities. Around 2016, I stumbled upon the fascinating realm of Data Science, which was gaining momentum in the news and tech circles. Intrigued, I embarked on a self-driven learning journey, taking courses from renowned institutions like John Hopkins University through Coursera. These courses ignited my passion and set me on a transformative path.

Crafting Impactful Solutions

Throughout my career, I’ve taken on diverse challenges that pushed the boundaries of what data can achieve. At LiveRamp, I developed a groundbreaking Ranking ML model that aims to enhance agreement with Amazon by a remarkable 169%. This model addresses the complex issue of device sharing, predicting top users from online datasets. The solution involves a strategic blend of machine learning techniques and collaboration with engineers for effective future deployment.

During my tenure as a Senior Data Scientist at Orchard, I left no stone unturned. Not only did I optimize Orchard’s backend, eliminating technical debt and enhancing understanding of crucial assumptions, but I also explored novel avenues. One such avenue involved using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to cluster user comments in digital marketing campaigns, showcasing my commitment to innovation and experimentation.

Illuminating Anomalies and Enabling Savings

At FRB Kansas City, I spearheaded the completion of an Anomaly Detection model. Collaborating closely with software engineers, I harnessed the power of machine learning to identify anomalies in startup programs. This solution contributed to smoother IT operations, demonstrating the potential of data-driven insights.

Guiding Growth and Sharing Knowledge

I’ve not only embraced challenging projects but also embraced the role of a mentor and leader. At the Texas Workforce Commission, I developed the agency’s first in-house fraud detection model, saving the state $20 million in its inaugural year. Additionally, I’ve successfully mentored junior data scientists, fostering growth within teams.

Nuggets of Wisdom for Aspiring Data Scientists

To those aspiring to carve a niche in Data Science, my advice is simple: build a strong foundation, whether it’s through a STEM degree or dedicated self-learning. Never stop learning, as the field is ever-evolving. Lastly, don’t let gatekeepers or naysayers deter you from your path. Data Science is a realm of boundless possibilities, waiting for your unique insights and contributions.
